1212_0744 Bison by wild prairie man on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
There was no place for me to run, no place to hide, so I made sure these Bison knew I was there. No point in startling them. They allowed me to shoot at relatively close range. I didn’t linger long (lest they grow too curious). I thanked them, and went on my way. I bring an attitude of respect to every wildlife encounter; seems to work. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

1212_0215 Massey Harris by wild prairie man on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
I’ve been driving past this old Massey Harris tractor on the outskirts of Val Marie for years. At last I stopped for a photo. Since my usual subject is the natural world and my usual direction is the other way, it’s rare to drive by this relic with time to stop, camera in hand, and good light. Finally!

1210_0199 Bison dominance display by wild prairie man on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
Two bull Bison face off on the prairie. Their “fight” consisted of some head butting and a lot of pushing. The larger bison on the left easily proved dominant, and I think that was the whole point: testing to establish or affirm status in the herd hierarchy. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

1207_1155 Night lightning at Newton Lake by wild prairie man on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
Last night we were treated to a distant, passing thunderstorm. I saw the sky lighting up around 10:30, grabbed my gear and drove out along the Newton Lake Road, northwest of Val Marie (Saskatchewan). Newton Lake is a large reservoir created by a dam on the Frenchman River, and serves as irrigation water for farmers and ranchers downstream.
It was a fairly safe storm to shoot, passing by at a distance, never coming close, and it gave me a chance to try out my new Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. I had a manual version of this lens years ago, but lost it. The new one seems just as sharp as the one I remember, and only costs four times as much ($250 vs $65).

Non-Tropical Cyclone Over Canada (NASA, International Space Station, 06/27/12) by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
One of the Expedition 31 crew members working in the Cupola aboard the International Space Station, flying about 240 miles above Earth, recorded this frame featuring a non-tropical cyclone located over northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Lake Manitoba (lower center) and Lake Winnipeg (lower right) are visible. The structure on the upper right is part of the Japanese Experiment Module’s Exposed Facility (JEF). The hardware at top includes part of the port truss structure (solar arrays and radiators, and part of one of the ExPRESS Logistics Carriers).
