“Sky Crystals” - upcoming book by Don Komarechka by ChaoticMind75 on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
Canadian photographer Don Komarechka announces his book about snowflakes: photography and editing technique he uses, snowflake images, science and physics of snowflakes and more. The book will be 300 pages, hardcover and awesome.
“Standing in frigid temperatures a meter away from comfort and warmth can be a daunting task. Using macro equipment that gives you incredibly little focus, it can be hard to even find a snowflake in the viewfinder. Freezing hands and shivering arms can make the situation worse. However, once you’ve got your first snowflake, you’ll smile at every snowfall from then on. But until you succeed, people will think you’re crazy for trying.”
“Photography is often a gateway to learning about the world around you. For as long as I have been a professional photographer, I have made the study and photography of snowflakes my winter passion. The project has taught me more than I could have imagined about physics, light, beauty and how we see the world. This book is the culmination of my snowflake project; I want to share all of my knowledge, images and inspiration with the world in a book that will last forever.” - Don Komarechka
Don - wonderful photographer, his snow crystal images definitely one of the best i’ve ever seen, far better than my own. He starts funding this book’s print production through indiegogo, a Kickstarter-like service. All details about book and author’s video can be found here:igg.me/at/skycrystals

Sunrise, Robin Hoods Bay by dougchinnery.com on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
A quick upload of an image from a few years ago, taken on August Bank Holiday at sunrise in Robin Hoods Bay. Because of the time of sunrise in August, Elizabeth & I had to get up just after midnight for the two hour drive to the bay to be down on the beach an hour before sunrise, which was tough. But the reward was to have the place to ourselves and to witness a really beautiful sunrise.
I just wish I had the skills back then that I have now, but it didn’t turn out too bad.
I thought I would upload an image of Robin Hoods Bay as this is where I am leading a workshop tonight with a very enthusiastic group. I hope they get good light (the forecast is very promising) and am really looking forward to it. Then tomorrow I am with them down on Saltwick Bay.
Both places have really tough climbs back to the car, but that is the price we pay for being able to be in such beautiful places and the pain of the climb is soon forgotten while the images can be enjoyed for years to come.
For everyone on my mailing list, I am sending my latest newsletter out today with all my new workshops to give you a chance to book ahead of everyone else.
if you want to subscribe, please just go to my website at and use the simple form on the homepage. My newsletters also include helpful thoughts and tips as well as a book review.
Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy your camera if you get a chance to get out and use it
You will find details on all of my photography workshops across the UK HERE See My Profile Page for links to my website, blog and free downloads. You can also sign up to my photography newsletter.

Day 264 of 366 ” For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. by Chris Willis 10 on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilization, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.” Robert Louis Stevenson
I finally became reunited with a Rough Guide to Japan that Simon bought me, when I had only just met him, and wrote a quote in. This was the quote and it was very appropriate to Japan as I was so uncomfortable trying to sleep on hard Japanese Futons that I only managed one nights sleep the whole trip. That was when we managed to afford a bigger room so I stacked all the spare bedding up and slept on that, like the purple princess that I am!
This quote seems appropriate again as I am off to Ethiopia soon. This time Steve has bought me a Lonely Planet guide. I am very much looking forward to stepping outside of my comfortable bubble that is my life and experiencing a different culture.

1207_1155 Night lightning at Newton Lake by wild prairie man on Flickr.A través de Flickr:
Last night we were treated to a distant, passing thunderstorm. I saw the sky lighting up around 10:30, grabbed my gear and drove out along the Newton Lake Road, northwest of Val Marie (Saskatchewan). Newton Lake is a large reservoir created by a dam on the Frenchman River, and serves as irrigation water for farmers and ranchers downstream.
It was a fairly safe storm to shoot, passing by at a distance, never coming close, and it gave me a chance to try out my new Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. I had a manual version of this lens years ago, but lost it. The new one seems just as sharp as the one I remember, and only costs four times as much ($250 vs $65).

De La Luz Y De La Sombra by Manel Cantarero on Flickr.
